In the Fellow craft degree, we are taught about the seven liberal arts and sciences and that we should engage with in constant study.
The seven liberal arts and sciences are divided into the Trivium and the Quadrivium. The Trivium is studied and learned first, then the Quadrivium. It is essential that they are studied in this order.
How many Master Masons engage and study the Trivium and the Quadrivium and the seven liberal arts and sciences after the Fellowcraft degree? From my own personal experience visiting many lodges, the answer is not many.
The very essence of what Freemasonry is and the foundation it rests upon is skipped with little to no consideration for its’ great importance. Then later, when a man starts to think about the degree process and ask the questions, why was this done, what does it mean, how can I relate this to my life to become a better man, the answers become unclear and other brothers in the lodge, under the same haze and confusion, stroke the fires ego which just add to the confusion.
How does anyone learn to interpret the symbols of the lodge or the symbols of language without the proper tools of interpretation and logic? They can’t. Today, we see ego’s in the world and in our lodges out of control, running an unconscious emotionally reactive, unintelligent and illogical environmental programing void of the foundations of the Trivium.
Why is any man give the Master Mason degree without first climbing the winding staircase as a Fellowcraft with a passion to learn and study the 7 Liberal Arts and Sciences? Once a Fellowcraft demonstrates the knowledge and wisdom of the 7 Liberal Arts and Sciences, then they continue on to the Master Mason degree. To me it doesn’t make sense to give a man the working tools to build their temple when they have never been shown how to use those tools.
I’m not attempting to change U.S. Freemasonry or instruct lodges on how to run. That is not my job and is beyond what I’m interested in doing.

Good article. It has inspired me to do an education series on the liberal arts at my lodge. But when talking about the stairs should it not be Quindrivium not Quaddriviim? We are talking about the 5 not 4. Are we not?
